The signs and symptoms of fractures, dislocations or severe |sprains| include severe pain and tenderness in the injured area, swelling or bruising, loss of motion, possibly a protruding bone, and an extremity, such as a finger, arm or leg, may be bent out of normal alignment. The steps for treatment are: check for breathing (see OVERVIEW); control any |bleeding| (see |BLEEDING|); do not move if the victim is unconscious or if back/neck injuries are suspected; immobilize the injured area and keep movement to a minimum; treat for |shock| (see |SHOCK|); and seek immediate medical assistance.
